Algae Knitting Circle In-Person

Come make bio yarn with Rae Yuping Hsu, an artist/researcher working with biomaterials! In this session, we will learn to create bio yarn from alginate, an edible natural polymer found in seaweed. After a whole hour of knitting, we'll stitch together our patches to create an algae quilt. All materials will be provided so just come with your curious mind :) This workshop is hosted by Tisch's ITP/IMA Material Kitchen.

Rae Yuping Hsu (they/it) is an artist and educator from Taipei, Taiwan, currently based in New York. Their practice is research-based and materially informed, spanning across multiple disciplines and materials; from hot glass to fibroblasts, passports to fecal sports. Their recent works speculate on microbial ethics within interplanetary travel; gut microbiome colonization among immigrants; life and death with microplastics; and the politics of immortality. They work interstitially, collaborating often with artists, researchers and scientists. They hold a Masters of Science in Art, Culture, and Technology from MIT, and currently teaches at The New School, NYU, and SVA. https://hsurae.com
