Digital Without Tears: Great (and Easy!) Tools for Teaching & Learning In-Person
Are you curious about using Digital Humanities (DH) tools in your classroom or research, but hesitant because you don’t have coding experience? Don’t worry—there are plenty of powerful, easy-to-use tools available that can help you bring DH projects to life without the steep learning curve! Whether you’re looking to create timelines, interactive maps, dynamic websites, or more, there’s a tool for you—and you don’t need to be a coder to use them.
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll introduce you to nearly a dozen free, mostly open-source tools that can be learned in minutes and put to immediate use in your teaching and learning practices. These tools are perfect for educators, students, or researchers who want to enhance their work with digital elements without the stress of complicated software or coding.
In this session, you’ll explore:
- Creating Interactive Timelines: Learn how to use simple, intuitive tools to visualize historical events, course content, or research timelines with ease.
- Mapping and Visualizing Data: Discover tools that allow you to map out geographic data and add an interactive, spatial dimension to your research or lessons.
- Building Dynamic Websites: Get familiar with platforms that let you build engaging websites and digital projects without any coding experience.
- Enhancing Pedagogy: Explore how to use digital tools to spice up your teaching methods—whether you're creating interactive lessons, fostering collaboration, or visualizing concepts.
- Open-Source & Free Tools: All of the tools we’ll cover are free and mostly open-source, meaning they can be used in the classroom or for research without any costs.
- Quick Learning Curves: These tools are designed for non-experts, so you can pick them up quickly and start using them right away without getting bogged down by a steep learning curve.
Whether you’re new to Digital Humanities or looking for simple ways to integrate digital elements into your teaching and research, this workshop will provide you with practical tools to enhance your work.
