Literature Reviews in the Sciences Online

A literature review is an integral part of research and writing in the sciences. A literature review can be standalone document or part of a larger article or thesis. They may be produced for a class assignment or something that you wish to publish. While some of the details may differ between specific disciplines, the overall approach has much in common across the natural and social sciences.

In this workshop, we will learn:

  • About the different types of literature reviews
  • Where to find various subject and function-specific databases
  • How to scale your research question and translate it into an efficient database search
  • How to develop criteria to help you decide which results to include in the review
  • Methods you can use to begin synthesizing your findings

*Note: while some of the materials covered in this workshop are relevant for performing systematic and scoping reviews, we will not be going into detail about this methodologies in this session.
