Breaking Up with Google Docs Online

Discover privacy-first alternatives for research, writing, and note-taking in 30 minutes

Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Evernote have become the default tools for writing and managing knowledge—but they aren't the only options. In this 30-minute introduction, we'll explore two powerful open-source alternatives—Joplin and Obsidian—that give you greater control over your notes, your workflow, and your data.

Designed with flexibility, local ownership, and privacy in mind, these tools make it easier to build a long-term research and writing practice without locking your ideas into proprietary platforms. We'll compare the strengths of each application, demonstrate how they organize knowledge differently than traditional documents, and help you decide which best fits your workflow.

Whether you're managing research notes, drafting articles, or simply looking for a better way to think on the page, this session offers a practical starting point for making the switch.

You'll leave with:

  • An introduction to Joplin and Obsidian
  • An understanding of the benefits of open-source, privacy-first software
  • A comparison of each platform's strengths and research workflows
  • Practical next steps for getting started
