How do we equip researchers with the critical skills required for working within the ecosystems of formalized knowledge representation that increasingly define data repositories, from data codebooks to the semantic web? Complementing concepts of information literacy, this poster proposes the concept of ontology literacy, and highlights Wikimedia projects as sites to explore practical questions. Wikidata is the structured-data counterpart to Wikipedia. As an open, collaboratively-edited knowledge base, Wikidata holds great promise for information-seekers generally and the scholarly community in particular. This poster critically examines the sociotechnical world of Wikidata, and discusses it as a site for, and subject of, instruction.

As a part of NYU's commitment to global inclusion, our events and initiatives are open to individuals of all backgrounds and identities.
